Department of Biosystems Engineering
overview
With the rapid economic advancement, the country needs graduates with sound theoretical and practical knowledge and also with rigorous technical skills in environmental and biological systems. At the Department of Biosystems Engineering we explore interactions between soil, plants, animals, environment, climate and humans in systems for sustainable production of food and renewable raw materials. Our teaching and research deal with questions about sustainable and efficient use of limited resources for production in agriculture and combine detailed studies in biology and technology of production systems with systems analyses and cross-disciplinary syntheses. The Department has a broad competence in agricultural and horticultural crop science, bio-energy, technology, animal welfare, resource use efficiency, environmental impact and food safety. We deliver research-based knowledge in teaching at basic and advanced levels and through collaboration with society, and contribute thereby to innovations, advisory services and decision making for solving complex problems.

Department of Biosystems Engineering
The Department of Biosystems Engineering was found in 2016 aiming to offer multidisciplinary knowledge on the fundamental concepts, principles, practices and technologies relevant to sustainable use of biological production systems and product development in Sri Lanka. The Department has a broad competence in agricultural and horticultural crop science, bio-energy, technology, animal welfare, resource use efficiency, environmental impact and food safety. With modern concepts of teaching and learning, we deliver research-based knowledge in teaching at basic and advanced levels and through collaboration with society, and contribute thereby to innovations, advisory services and decision making for solving complex problems.
The department offers Bachelor of Biosystems Technology degree programme, which is a 4-year degree programme dedicated to produce graduates with sound theoretical and practical knowledge and also with rigorous technical skills in environmental and biological systems. The graduates of our department are encouraged to improve their soft skills and practical expertise, along with the theoretical knowledge producing balanced graduates for the country. Despite of being initiated recently, the department possess a panel of well qualified academics with expertise in a variety of biosystems related discipline. Further, with the standard laboratories and physical resources, the department of Biosystems Engineering remains as an outstanding department in Sri Lanka.
As the head of the department, my goal is to hone the inherent skills of graduates with emphasis on theoretical background, practical applications and research skills. I invite you to explore our department.
