Head’s Message
Horticulture is an application science – the science developed by horticulturists is applied to plant production, improvement, marketing and the enhancement of communities. Horticulture also contributes to quality of life, and the beauty, sustainability and rehabilitation of the environment. It impacts our lives on a daily basis by providing nutritious food, offering visual enjoyment, and promoting recreational activities. On top of these values, the importance of horticulture as a commercial industry is now highlighted than ever before due to its economic value generated by high value crops produced, job opportunities created and aesthetic pleasures. Professionally trained, skilful workforce is a vital requirement for the expansion of the industry. Our objective of the specialization programme is to develop the students’ ability to understand, use and contribute to the expanding scientific and technological contents of the discipline and to make significant contributions towards growing demands of the horticulture sector nationally and globally. We take pride in our prestigious alumni who significantly contribute to the society as professional horticulturists, scientists, researchers, academics, managers, educators, trainers and successful entrepreneurs, both in Sri Lanka and overseas. I invite you to join our team and explore the endless opportunities.
